2024 Summer Literacy Institute

Tallahassee, Fla., June 13, 2024 –  The Florida Department of Education and Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr., launched the 4th annual Summer Literacy Institute. The three-day event supports districts and schools by expanding literacy education resources and effectively implementing literacy education in VPK-Grade 5 classrooms statewide. The Institute provides professional learning opportunities for literacy leadership teams at the early childhood, school and district levels. More than 1,200 educators and literacy leaders are attending the institute.

The primary goals of the Summer Literacy Institute include increasing educator knowledge of the science of reading and evidence-based literacy practices and expanding knowledge of Florida’s K-5 B.E.S.T. (Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking) English Language Arts Standards and the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards for Four Years Old to Kindergarten. Educators were provided access to resources that support effective implementation of the standards and utilize assessment data to inform instruction and intervention. The Institute also facilitates professional networking opportunities among more than 1,200 literacy leaders and educators in attendance.
