Florida Department of Education to Host Disability History and Awareness Weeks Kick-Off Ceremony

Tallahassee, Fla., October 3, 2016 – Tomorrow, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) will kick off Disability History and Awareness Weeks with an opening ceremony at the Turlington Building. This observance serves as an opportunity to reflect on the valuable contributions individuals with disabilities make to our state. Speakers include Education Commissioner Pam Stewart and Florida Youth Council member Megan Atkinson. There will also be special performance The Electric People.

The first two weeks of October are Disability History and Awareness Weeks. Section 1003.4205, Florida Statutes, entitled Disability History and Awareness Instruction, requires school districts to designate the first two weeks of October as Disability History and Awareness Weeks. It is a time to promote providing instruction for students in all public schools to expand student knowledge, understanding and awareness of individuals with disabilities, disability history and the disability rights movement.
