Florida Department of Education Announces Over $5 Million Awarded to Strengthen the Teacher Pipeline
Tallahassee, Fla., November 12, 2024 – Today, Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr., awarded $5 million through the Pathways to Career Opportunities Grow Your Own Teacher Grant (PCOG GYO), to expand Florida’s teacher apprenticeship program and strengthen the teacher pipeline by creating pathways for aspiring educators. Seven institutions throughout the state will receive these funds to enhance or create teacher apprenticeship programs.
“Under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, Florida continues to enhance the teacher pipeline,” said Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. “The Pathways to Career Opportunities Grow Your Own Teacher Grant allows aspiring educators to gain practical experience while studying to become certified teachers. Making investments like this is how Florida remains the number one state for education.”
The PCOG GYO program leverages the power of apprenticeships by providing a no-cost, immersive pathway into the teaching profession. Unlike traditional training programs, this program prioritizes hands-on learning, where aspiring educators gain real-world experience under the guidance of seasoned teachers. By focusing on practical, in-classroom training, PCOG GYO creates a robust, well-prepared teacher pipeline for Florida’s schools.
Four institutions will receive an additional $4,348,921 in funding to enhance their 2023-2024 allocations and further advance their teacher apprenticeship programs. These institutions are:
- Broward College
- Florida A&M University
- Miami Dade College
- Seminole State College
Additionally, three new institutions will be awarded grants, increasing Florida’s capacity for the registered teacher apprenticeship program. The new institutions will receive $1,095,373 million funding through the PCOG GYO. These institutions are:
- St. Petersburg College
- Polk State College
- Tallahassee State College
This expanded funding supports Florida’s ongoing commitment to attract and retain high-quality teachers, following Governor DeSantis’ 2023 establishment of the Teacher Apprenticeship Program through HB 1035.
