Tallahassee, Fla., December 12, 2018 – Today, First Lady Ann Scott visited Brookview Elementary School in Duval County as the winner of the 2018 First Lady’s Summer Literacy Adventure. The school participated with nearly the entire student body pledging to read more than 9,000 books over the summer. Each student and school employee received family passes to a Florida state park and the school received 100 books for its library.

First Lady Ann Scott said, “One of the most rewarding parts of being the First Lady of Florida is sharing my love of literacy with students across the state. I am extremely proud of Brookview Elementary School and their students for making literacy a priority. Throughout my time as First Lady, I have been delighted to see so many students participate in this challenge and I am so thankful for Florida’s incredible teachers.”

Over the past eight years, First Lady Ann Scott has visited 265 schools in all 67 Florida counties, and, to help encourage students to explore the outdoors, the First Lady has visited more than 20 Florida State Parks during the annual Summer Literacy Adventure. The Summer Literacy Adventure is a partnership between the Florida Department of Education (FDOE), Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Florida Lottery that is designed to encourage Florida students to strengthen their reading skills during the summer break.

“Congratulations to the students at Brookview Elementary School for winning the Summer Literacy Adventure!” said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. “Reading during the summer is vital to lifelong learning and success. I am grateful to First Lady Ann Scott for her commitment to reading and literacy, and I applaud Brookview Elementary School’s students, teachers and leaders for their hard work.”

The First Lady’s Summer Literacy Adventure challenged students to read as many books as possible during the summer break. First Lady Ann Scott visited state parks and emphasized to students the value of reading. Statewide, more than 17,000 students participated and pledged to read books this summer.

“Each year, the Summer Literacy Adventure serves in encouraging and inspiring our next generation of environmental stewards,” said DEP Secretary Noah Valenstein. “We were honored to partner once again with First Lady Ann Scott, FDOE and the Florida Lottery for this year’s event, and we congratulate the students of Brookview Elementary School and all who participated.”

Research shows that children who do not continue reading through the summer can lose a month or more of progress made during the schoolyear. By reminding their children to read over breaks from school, parents play an important role in ensuring every child reads at or above grade level.

The Florida Lottery donated books to students throughout the summer as part of the 2018 Summer Literacy Adventure.

“The Florida Lottery congratulates the students of Brookview Elementary School on winning the 2018 Summer Literacy Adventure,” said Secretary Jim Poppell. “We are proud of our longstanding partnership with First Lady Ann Scott, the Department of Education and the Department of Environmental Protection to inspire our state’s next generation of readers.”
