To The Core Podcast Features What’s Working Workshops

~ Latest podcast segment provides quick look at hot topics in education ~

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Department of Education (DOE) has posted the next segment of To the Core, a podcast series hosted by Florida Teacher of the Year Cheryl Conley. The latest segment includes an insider’s view of the DOE’s What’s Working Series Workshops, a series of in-depth meetings hosted by the Florida State Board of Education that provided an opportunity for all education stakeholders to interact and dialogue with national experts on specific topics that support effective teaching and school leadership.

“Open dialogue, informed conversations, critical questions; these concepts formed the foundation of the State Board’s What’s Working Workshops and gave us access to terrific feedback from our stakeholders,” said Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith. “Through our newest To the Core podcast we can now share those meetings with even more individuals to ensure the discussions continue and help drive our education reform efforts in collaborative directions.”

From September through October 2010, five workshops were held throughout the state covering such topics as value added measures, teacher evaluations and turning around low performing schools. Nationally-recognized education leaders spoke with teachers, principals, teacher educators, administrators, parents and community leaders to assist in future policy development.

“As a teacher, I believe these opportunities for information sharing were exactly the forums necessary to build a shared approach to education,” said Cheryl Conley. “Each of us can contribute to our student’s successes, and I hope that everyone gets the opportunity to view the archived workshops.”

To the Core is a regular podcast produced by the DOE that provides an opportunity for teachers to learn about issues impacting their profession. The podcasts are housed on iTunes U, which provides free multimedia content to schools, parents, students, administrators and teachers both in Florida and around the world.
