Second Annual District Data Leader of the Year Award Program Kicks Off

~ Nominations now being accepted to recognize Florida’s public school data leaders ~

Tallahassee – For the second year in a row, the Florida Department of Education (DOE) is seeking out the top school district superintendent in the state who shows exemplary leadership in using data to increase student achievement. DOE’s District Data Leader of the Year Award program highlights the critical role superintendents play in supporting and encouraging the use of data and technology, with past submissions highlighting cutting-edge uses of data in areas such as educator professional development and measuring student academic achievement.

“Florida continues to push the envelope when it comes to utilizing data and technology in our schools for the benefit of students,” said Florida Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith. “The District Data Leader program helps us to recognize those efforts, and I look forward to seeing another great year of innovative submissions from districts throughout the state.”

The annual award program was launched for the first time last year to recognize school superintendents who continually employ innovative data research strategies, and incorporate new methods and opportunities to improve the use of data. Through their community partnerships, districts continue to bolster the support and use of data systems.

“Recognizing the exceptional leadership of our district superintendents is key in promoting a culture of data use that will continue to drive student achievement forward,” said DOE Deputy Commissioner Kris Ellington. “There are so many inventive approaches in our districts that simply don’t get the attention they deserve. I’m confident that this awards program will help shine a spotlight on them.”

School districts wishing to nominate their superintendent must submit the nomination packet by August 1, 2011. A selection committee will choose five state finalists and select an overall winner from among them. The statewide winner will be named in Fall 2011. Each finalist and the statewide winner will be publicly recognized during an awards ceremony in Tallahassee and will receive a plaque commending their accomplishment.
