Literacy League Video Featuring Marilyn Shaw Now Available
~ Author answers students' questions for her book "Solomon" ~TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Department of Education's interactive book club, Literacy League, is excited to announce the availability of its latest video installment. Author Marilyn Bishop Shaw, a Florida teacher and resident, shares her views about her book, "Solomon," in the newest video published on the Department's YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/educationfl.
"Literacy League brings stories to life by allowing students to communicate with their favorite authors," Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson said. "This book is especially engaging because it highlights Florida's history through an adventure that captures students' imaginations."
Ms. Shaw's book follows 11-year-old Solomon as he and his parents, who are newly freed slaves, build their new home in the North Florida wilderness. It details their battle to thrive amongst uncertain weather, resources and cultures.
A 36-year teacher of Gadsden, Pinellas, Lafayette and Alachua counties, Ms. Shaw grew up on a farm near a small town in North Florida. She holds degrees from Florida State University and the University of Florida. Although most of her life has been spent in Florida, every other year she leads a group of students and adults on European tours.
"The Literacy League is a unique, giant book club for Florida students and teachers," Ms. Shaw said. "I'm appreciative of the opportunity to share my deep Florida roots with them and hope more and more people will come to understand and value Florida's rich history."
Throughout the year, the Department's Literacy League book club connects prominent authors with Florida middle and elementary school students. Students submit questions about the book and the author responds via video. The Literacy League videos are available on Department's YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/educationfl.
