Florida Department of Education Kicks Off Third Annual District Data Leader of the Year Program

Tallahassee - The Florida Department of Education (DOE) today announced that nominations are being accepted to recognize Florida's public school data leaders. DOE's District Data Leader of the Year Award program highlights the critical role superintendents play in supporting and encouraging the use of data and technology, with past submissions highlighting cutting-edge uses of data in areas such as educator professional development and measuring student academic achievement.

"Infusing education data and technology into our schools for the benefit of students is a priority in our state," said Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson. "The District Data Leader program helps identify school district efforts to use data-driven techniques and recognize great accomplishments in this area."

The annual award program was launched for the first time in 2010 to recognize school superintendents who continually employ innovative data research strategies, and incorporate new methods and opportunities to improve the use of data. In 2011, Hillsborough Superintendent MaryEllen Elia was recognized as the District Data Leader of the Year for her efforts to gather stakeholder input to build customized school- and district-level performance scorecards and a comprehensive data dashboard that integrates existing longitudinal district and state data for students, teachers, and principals into a single, secure, user-friendly interface.

School districts wishing to nominate their superintendent must submit the nomination packet by August 1, 2012. A selection committee will choose five state finalists and select an overall winner from among them. The statewide winner will be named in fall 2012. Each finalist and the statewide winner will be publicly recognized during an awards ceremony in Tallahassee and will receive a plaque commending their accomplishment.
