Miami-Dade Principal Named Milken Educator

- Student achievement excels under Dr. Kevin Williams' leadership -

Tallahassee, Fla., November 13, 2012 - What began as a school assembly today celebrating academic success turned into much more when Dr. Kevin Williams, principal of Norwood Elementary School in Miami, was honored with the Milken Educator Award. Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart and Milken Family Foundation Senior Vice President Dr. Jane Foley were joined by Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho in presenting the award to the surprised educator in front of the school's students and staff.

"I am absolutely thrilled to honor Dr. Williams with the Milken Educator Award," said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. "He is an outstanding educator and school leader whose guidance and compassion inspires students, parents, and staff to achieve beyond their expectations."

Dr. Williams is a product of Miami-Dade Public Schools and began his teaching career in 1998 as a math teacher at Norwood Elementary. He returned in 2010 to take on his current role as principal, using a hands-on approach to empower teachers and mentor students. His focus on student achievement and professional development for teachers fosters a culture of excellence that last year led to the highest school grading score ever achieved at Norwood Elementary.

Hailed as the "Oscar of Teaching," the Milken Educator Award recognizes educators throughout the nation who have a profound effect on student achievement. Not only is the entire selection process confidential, but so is the real purpose of the school assemblies where the awards are presented. Considered one of education's most prestigious recognitions, the Milken Educator Award comes with a no-strings attached cash prize of $25,000.
