Monroe County Education Leaders Celebrate National Charter School Week
~ State Board of Education Vice-Chair John R. Padget hosts roundtable to hear successes and challenges facing Monroe County Charter Schools ~The meeting is part of the National Charter Schools week (PDF, 247KB). Florida State Board of Education Member and Vice-Chair John R. Padget will host the meeting. Adam Miller, executive director of the Florida Department of Education's Office of Independent Education and Parental Choice will speak at the meeting, together with Monroe County Superintendent of Schools Mark T. Porter. Monroe county school board members have been invited.
"With 13 percent of students in Monroe County choosing to attend one of our six charter schools, our district has become a national example of how to best provide diversified school choice," said Padget. "I am excited to host state and district leaders as we continue to provide school options for interested parents and students."
"Florida has become a national leader in school choice and Monroe had been one of the state's leaders," said Florida Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. "It's my pleasure to share statewide successes in every corner of the state."
Also planning to attend are board members of the six charters schools in the district and the six principals: Cathy Hoffman of Big Pine Academy; Corry Oliver of Key West Collegiate School; Lynn Barras of Key West Montessori Charter School; Jennifer Flores of Ocean Studies Charter; Kelly Mangel of Treasure Village Montesssori Charter School; and Elisa Jannes of Sigsbee Charter School.
"This is an open public roundtable," according to Padget. "Anyone interested in public charter schools in Monroe is invited to attend and join the conversation."
