Deadline Approaches to Provide Comment on Florida Standards

Tallahassee, Fla., October 29, 2013 - The deadline for citizens throughout Florida to provide input on Florida's English language arts and mathematics standards is fast approaching. October 31, 2013 is the deadline to submit feedback on the standards which were adopted by the State Board of Education in July 2010.

"I am extremely pleased and appreciate all the feedback from parents, teachers, administrators and the public about Florida's standards," said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. "We encourage everyone to take this opportunity to let us know their ideas and suggestions to make our standards the best they can be."

So far, the Department of Education (FDOE) has received nearly 13,000 comments and suggestions. In accordance with Governor Scott's executive order (PDF), FDOE also held three public meetings to gather input on the standards. All comments and suggestions will be reviewed and an update provided to the State Board of Education at its November 19 meeting at Santa Fe College in Gainesville.

Florida's standards are state-level expectations of what students should know at each grade level. Decisions about specific curriculums and instructional materials are made by local school districts and educators.

"Success is never final when it comes to improving our schools and providing our children with the best chance at success," said Stewart. "These standards will provide the framework for parents and teachers to communicate about the best paths forward for their children and classrooms."
