State Board of Education Member John Colon Named to Higher Education Coordinating Council
~Appointed to a two-year term by State Board of Education Chair Gary Chartrand~Tallahassee, Fla., November 8, 2013- State Board of Education member John Colon was recently appointed to the Florida Higher Education Coordinating Council (HECC) by State Board of Education Chair Gary Chartrand. The council oversees and coordinates new educational programs offered by Florida's higher education institutions.
"John's long history of volunteer service to myriad educational organizations combined with his experience in the private sector gives him a well-rounded viewpoint of our education system," said Chair Gary Chartrand. "He is an outstanding advocate for Florida's students and will be an excellent addition to this council."
Florida's Higher Education Council was established to work with the state's higher education sector to identify unmet needs, facilitate solutions to disputes among and between educational institutions, and approve creation of new degree programs and the establishment of new institutes, campuses or centers. The council makes policy and budget recommendations relating to higher education to the Legislature, the State Board of Education (K-12 and the Florida College System) and the Board of Governors (State University System of Florida).
"It is important that all of Florida's institutes of higher learning, both public and private, share a common vision as we prepare our students for success in careers and in life," said John Colon. John A. Colon is a senior vice president and investment officer at Wells Fargo Advisors in Sarasota, Chairman of the Sarasota Housing Authority and Chairman of the Sarasota Housing Funding Corporation. He was appointed to the State Board of Education by Governor Rick Scott in 2013. His appointment to the HECC begins immediately and expires in 2015.
