Governor Scott Recognizes Seven Educators with the Governor’s Shine Award

Tallahassee, Fla. –Today, during a meeting of the Florida Cabinet, Governor Rick Scott recognized seven outstanding educators with the Governor’s Shine Award. The Shine Award is presented to teachers and administrators in Florida who make significant contributions to the field of education. All of the teachers honored today are 2017 district teachers of the year.

Governor Scott said, “I am proud to present these outstanding educators with the Governor’s Shine Award today and thank them for their commitment to ensuring all students reach their full potential. The educators honored at today’s Cabinet meeting represent Florida’s high-quality teachers who dedicate their lives to preparing students for success in college and career.” 

The following educators were presented with the Governor’s Shine Award:

Marissa Ballard, Jackson County – Marissa Ballard is a kindergarten teacher with eight years’ experience at Sneads Elementary School in Jackson County. She is the 2011 Jackson County Rookie Teacher of the Year, 2017 District Winner of the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award and the 2017 Jackson County District Teacher of the Year.

Gregory Barron, Bay County – Gregory Barron has been teaching for six years at A. Crawford Mosley High School in Lynn Haven, where he teaches 10th and 12th grade Advanced Placement (AP) Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, and AP Human Geography. He was the Mosley Advanced Placement Program for Success (MAPPS) Teacher of the Year from 2013-2016, is the 2017 AP Teacher of the Year, and the 2017 Bay County District Teacher of the Year.

Lana Harrison, Gulf County – A veteran teacher with 12 years’ experience, Lana Harrison teaches Biology, Anatomy and Physiology Honors, and Health Science at Wewahitchka High School in Gulf County. She is the 2010 and 2017 Wewahitchka High School Teacher of the Year, the 2017 Gulf County District Teacher of the Year, and a member of the Florida Teacher Lead Network.

Lauren Marlow, Alachua County – Lauren Marlow has been teaching for ten years, with the last five at Oak View Middle School in Newberry. She teaches eighth grade Language Arts, Advanced Reading, Advanced Language Arts and Reading in the school’s Center for Advanced Academics and Technology magnet program, and has been evaluated as highly effective since 2013 and is a 2017 High Impact Teacher. Lauren is the 2017 Oak View Middle School Teacher of the Year, the 2017 Alachua County Middle School Teacher of the Year and the 2017 Alachua County District Teacher of the Year.

Theresa Ryan, Citrus County – Theresa Ryan is a third grade teacher at Citrus Springs Elementary School with seven years’ experience. She has been recognized as a High Impact Teacher and is the 2017 Citrus County District Teacher of the Year.

April Wallace, Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind – April Wallace has been teaching for nine years at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB) where she currently teaches fifth grade at the Elementary School. In addition to being a member of the Teacher LEAD Network, she is the recipient of the 2017 Macy’s Magic of Believing Award and is the 2011-12 FSDB Blind Elementary and Middle School Teacher of the Year, the 2017-18 FSDB Blind Elementary School Teacher of the Year, and the 2017-18 FSDB Teacher of the Year.

Lisa Ullman, Florida Virtual School – Lisa Ullman is a veteran educator with 21 years of experience, the last 11 of which are with the Florida Virtual School. Lisa teaches Calculus and Advanced Placement Calculus to students in grades 9-12. She is the 2002 Volusia County District Teacher of the Year, earned the 2017 United States Distance Learning Association Excellence in Teaching and Training Award and is the 2017-18 Florida Virtual School District Teacher of the Year.
