Students from Florida’s Tampa Bay Region Mark Higher Performance on State Assessments

Tallahassee, Fla., June 10, 2016 – Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today announced that students from Florida’s Tampa Bay area are improving their performance on state assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Civics and U.S. History.

“Today’s results show that our focus on improved student learning is working, and I commend our state’s students, educators, parents and school administrators for their hard work throughout the 2015-16 school year,” said Commissioner Stewart. “Even with a higher bar, Florida students continued the overall trend of increased performance year over year. We are committed to ongoing collaboration with district superintendents and school leaders to maintain this momentum so that all students are prepared to succeed in the next steps of their academic journey.”

Statewide, results show that the percentage of students achieving on mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) increased overall by one percentage point, with 58 percent of students in grades 3-5 and 56 percent of students in grades 6-8 scoring Level 3 or higher. Scores were up 5 percentage points for students younger than high school age taking Algebra with 88 percent scoring Level 3 or higher in 2016. In addition, the percentage of students scoring Level 3 or higher on the Algebra 2 end-of-course assessment increased by four percentage points while English Language Arts remained steady. Student results were up 1 percentage point in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science Assessment and Biology 1).

Highlights from Florida’s Tampa Bay region include:

Citrus County

  • Increased seven percentage points in both Algebra 2 and Civics.
  • Improved by six percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 91 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased five percentage points for high school students in Algebra 1.

Hardee County

  • Jumped 25 percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 98 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up 12 percentage points in Biology 1.
  • Improved nine percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Increased four percentage points in Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).

Hernando County

  • Moved up five percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Improved by 4 percentage points in both Civics and Grade 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).
  • Improved by three percentage points in Geometry.

Highlands County

  • Increased six percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Improved five percentage points in U.S. History.
  • Improved by four percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1).

Hillsborough County

  • Moved up seven percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 90 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved six percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Improved by one percentage point in Grades 6-8 English Language Arts, Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments), and Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1).

Manatee County

  • Moved up eight percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Improved three percentage points in Biology 1, Civics and U.S. History.
  • Increased by two percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 93 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.

Pasco County

  • Improved two percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 95 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased two percentage points in Civics.

Pinellas County

  • Improved 16 percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 84 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up three percentage points in Grades 6-8 English Language Arts.
  • Improved two percentage points in both Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) and Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined.

Polk County

  • Improved five percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 82 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up three percentage points in Civics. 
  • Improved two percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).

Sarasota County

  • Increased eight percentage points in Algebra 2, with 60 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved six percentage points in Civics for 77 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up three percentage points for high school students in Algebra 1.
