Central Florida Students Mark Higher Performance on State Assessments

Tallahassee, Fla., June 10, 2016 – Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today announced that students from Central Florida are improving their performance on state assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Civics and U.S. History.

“Today’s results show that our focus on improved student learning is working, and I commend our state’s students, educators, parents and school administrators for their hard work throughout the 2015-16 school year,” said Commissioner Stewart. “Even with a higher bar, Florida students continued the overall trend of increased performance year over year. We are committed to ongoing collaboration with district superintendents and school leaders to maintain this momentum so that all students are prepared to succeed in the next steps of their academic journey.”

Statewide, results show that the percentage of students achieving on mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) increased overall by one percentage point, with 58 percent of students in grades 3-5 and 56 percent of students in grades 6-8 scoring Level 3 or higher. Results were up 5 percentage points for students younger than high school age taking Algebra with 88 percent scoring Level 3 or higher in 2016. In addition, the percentage of students scoring Level 3 or higher on the Algebra 2 end-of-course assessment increased by four percentage points while English Language Arts remained steady. Student results were up 1 percentage point in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science Assessment and Biology 1).

Highlights from Central Florida include:

Brevard County

  • Improved eight percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 87 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased one percentage point in Algebra 2 and Civics.
  • Moved up one percentage point in Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).

Flagler County

  • Moved up seven percentage points in Algebra 2, with 54 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved five percentage points in Geometry, with 62 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased one percentage point in Grades 9-10 English Language Arts, Civics, and Grade 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology 1 End-of Course assessment).

Lake County

  • Improved nine percentage points for students younger than high school age scoring Level 3 or higher in Algebra 1, with 85 percent meeting that benchmark.
  • Increased eight percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Improved three percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments), and two percentage points in Civics.

Orange County

  • Improved three percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 82 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up two percentage points in Civics.
  • Increased one percentage point in Grades 6-8 English Language Arts.

Osceola County

  • Improved ten percentage points in Geometry.
  • Increased six percentage points in Biology 1, with 69 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up two percentage points in both Algebra 2 and U.S. History,

Seminole County

  • Increased five percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 90 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up two percentage points in both Algebra 2 and Grade 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology 1 End-of Course assessment).
  • Improved one percentage point in Civics and U.S. History.

Sumter County

  • Improved 15 percentage points in Algebra 2, with 47 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased 4 percentage points in Civics and three percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).
  • Moved up two percentage points in Grades 3-5 English Language Arts and students younger than high school age scoring Level 3 or higher in Algebra 1.

Volusia County

  • Improved four percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 94 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased four percentage points in Civics.
  • Improved three percentage points in Geometry.
