Students from Florida’s Big Bend Mark Higher Performance on State Assessments

Tallahassee, Fla., June 10, 2016 – Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today announced that students from Florida’s Big Bend are improving their performance on state assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Civics and U.S. History.

“Today’s results show that our focus on improved student learning is working, and I commend our state’s students, educators, parents and school administrators for their hard work throughout the 2015-16 school year,” said Commissioner Stewart. “Even with a higher bar, Florida students continued the overall trend of increased performance year over year. We are committed to ongoing collaboration with district superintendents and school leaders to maintain this momentum so that all students are prepared to succeed in the next steps of their academic journey.”

Statewide, results show that the percentage of students achieving on mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) increased overall by one percentage point, with 58 percent of students in grades 3-5 and 56 percent of students in grades 6-8 scoring Level 3 or higher. Results were up 5 percentage points for students younger than high school age taking Algebra with 88 percent scoring Level 3 or higher in 2016. In addition, the percentage of students scoring Level 3 or higher on the Algebra 2 end-of-course assessment increased by four percentage points while English Language Arts remained steady. Student results were up 1 percentage point in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science Assessment and Biology 1).

Highlights from Florida’s Big Bend include:

Franklin County

  • Jumped 25 percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment), with 62 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up eight percentage points in Biology 1 and seven percentage points in Civics.
  • Improved four percentage points in Geometry.

Gadsden County

  • Improved 19 percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 75 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up four percentage points in Grades 9-10 English Language Arts.
  • Increased by three percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment) and two percentage points in Civics.

Jefferson County

  • Improved 19 percentage points for high school students in Algebra 1.
  • Increased nine percentage points in Grades 6-8 English Language Arts.
  • Moved up eight percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment) and seven percentage points in Algebra 2.

Leon County

  • Increased by three percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments), with 64 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved two percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 94 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up one percentage point in Grades 3-5 English Language Arts and Civics.

Liberty County

  • Improved 13 percentage points in Grade 5 Science, with 57 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up 13 percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment), with 60 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased by ten percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).
  • Improved performance by eight percentage points in Algebra 2, six percentage points in Biology 1 and five percentage points in U.S. History.

Madison County

  • Improved 13 percentage points in Grade 5 Science.
  • Increased by seven percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment).
  • Improved by six percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).
  • Moved up four percentage points in Geometry and for high school students in Algebra 1.

Taylor County

  • Jumped 41 percentage points in Algebra 2, with 64 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased 19 percentage points in Civics, with 60 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improving three percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) and two percentage points in Grades 6-8 English Language Arts.

Wakulla County

  • Improved 13 percentage points in U.S. History, with 80 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up seven percentage points in Civics, with 74 percent of students scoring at Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased five percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment) and four percentage points in both Biology 1 and for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1.

Florida State University School

  • Moved up five percentage points in Grade 5 Science, with 75 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased three percentage points in both Civics and U.S. History.
  • Improved two percentage points in Grades 3-5 English Language Arts, with 80 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.

Florida A&M Developmental Research School

  • Moved up 12 percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments), with 66 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved 11 percentage points in Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments), and ten percentage points in Civics.
  • Increased by seven percentage points in Grades 9-10 English Language Arts.
  • Increased by six percentage points in Biology 1.
