First Lady Ann Scott Shares Her Passion For Reading With Florida Students During Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!

Tallahassee, Fla., January 25, 2016 – Today, First Lady Ann Scott kicked off her literacy tour in conjunction with 2016 Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! at Strawberry Crest High School in Tampa. The eighth annual Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! focuses on civics, and reminds students of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and the impact an individual can have on their community. The theme this year is “Literacy Changes Our World.”

“Strong reading skills set students up for success in the classroom and beyond, and I am honored to have the opportunity to help our state’s students foster an appreciation for literacy,” said First Lady Ann Scott. “As a grandmother, I cherish the time I spend reading to my four young grandsons and seeing their eyes light up as they are introduced to new and exciting stories. I encourage all Florida students and families to participate in Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! by making reading a part of their daily routines.”

First Lady Ann Scott will visit six schools on her literacy tour:

  • Cannella Elementary School in Tampa
  • Tangelo Park Elementary in Orlando
  • MetroWest Elementary in Orlando
  • Thornebrooke Elementary in Orlando
  • Southside Elementary in Starke
  • Starke Elementary in Starke

“Florida’s students have consistently exceeded the national average in reading, thanks to the hard work of parents and educators who have supported them and made literacy a priority,” said Education Commissioner Pam Stewart. “With this year’s theme, ‘Literacy Changes the World,’ we combine the importance of literacy with the invaluable lesson of civic responsibility, and I hope that all of our state’s schools and families take full advantage of this great learning opportunity.”

Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! is a week-long celebration from Jan. 25 - 29, 2016, to raise awareness for literacy programs and projects offered by the Department of Education's Just Read, Florida! office, and its partner agencies and organizations.
