Florida College System Chancellor Recognizes Innovation and Excellence

Lake Buena Vista, Fla., November 10, 2015 – Tomorrow, Florida College System (FCS) Chancellor Madeline Pumariega will recognize four colleges for innovation and excellence through the Chancellor’s Best Practice Awards. Lake-Sumter State College, Chipola College, Seminole State College of Florida and Florida State College at Jacksonville will be honored for programs of excellence at the Association of Florida Colleges’ 66th Annual Convention in Lake Buena Vista.

“The Chancellor’s Best Practice Awards is an opportunity for our colleges to showcase pioneering program strategies that have proven successful at their colleges and in their communities,” said Chancellor Pumariega. “This award program recognizes these colleges for creating and sustaining successful, innovative programs and then shares those best practices with all institutions in the Florida College System.”

Chancellor Pumariega recognized Lake-Sumter State College for its RISE Math Program. The program takes a more active role in facilitating the transition of students from high school to college by collaborating with the Sumter School District to develop a free summer math and college-exposure program called the RISE Summer Math Academy. Students participating in the academy gain math knowledge and skills through modularized technology enhanced curriculum, personalized pathways, and one-on-one assistance with math professionals. This three week academy removes barriers and prepares students for participation in dual enrollment college credit math courses and/or increasing success in their remaining high school math requirements as they are exposed to college resources and culture.

Chipola College was distinguished for its Creating a Pathway to Graduation through Academic Support program which establishes the Academic Center for Excellence to provide on-demand tutoring as the first line of defense against attrition. Faculty alongside academic scholars help provide support to students needing academic resources to ensure course success. Data clearly confirm that the ACE is an exemplary practice.

Seminole State College of Florida’s Capstone Project is a culminating experience for seniors.  The project is substantive and comprehensive synthesis of learning accumulated in the major, including broadly wide-ranging knowledge of the discipline and its methodologies.  Overall the project is rigorous and inclusive because every student learning outcome in the BIM degree program is measured by the project.  After the thesis/research work is done, a deliverable document is provided to the business/sponsor and presiding faculty, along with a 30- minute professional presentation to a large audience. Students have been employed with the respective company upon graduation.

Florida State College at Jacksonville recognized for its iNoVATE – A Network Virtualization program which fills the growing void for high-technology virtualization skills training. iNoVATE is a unique collaborative partnership between Florida State College at Jacksonville, Eastern Florida State College, Tallahassee Community College, Seminole State College, Daytona State College, the National Center for Convergence Technology, Florida Workforce Development Boards, the Florida Department of Education and industry professionals with virtualization subject matter expertise to create an innovative curriculum development and training program for undergraduate and high school students majoring in emerging technology fields.

In all, 33 best practice submissions were received from 23 FCS institutions. “I applaud our colleges for their commitment to excellence and innovation in our system,” continued Chancellor Pumariega. “It is this commitment that keeps the Florida College System in the forefront as national leader in higher education.”
