Commissioner Stewart Congratulates Leadership Academy Graduates

Tallahassee, Fla., June 16, 2015 – Tonight in Altamonte Springs, Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart will recognize 147 graduates of the Commissioner’s Leadership Academy. Commissioner Stewart will be joined by State Board of Education Chair Marva Johnson, Chancellor of K-12 Public Schools Hershel Lyons, and Deputy Chancellor for Educator Quality Brian Dassler.

“My enthusiastic congratulations to this year’s Leadership Academy graduates,” said Commissioner Stewart. “These school leaders learned innovative and essential strategies to improve teacher and student success, and I look forward to seeing how they apply their knowledge to make positive change in their schools.”

“The Commissioner’s Leadership Academy is a wonderful opportunity for school leaders to hone their leadership skills,” said Chair Johnson. “I am confident these educators will have a lasting impact in their schools and I encourage future leaders to seek this professional training.”

Dr. Elaine Liftin from the Council for Educational Change will welcome the graduates and district leaders to the ceremony and deliver opening remarks. Jim Thompson, senior vice president of State Farm, which is sponsoring the graduation reception, will also speak.

The graduation ceremony marks the end of a year-long rigorous professional development program for Florida principals, principal supervisors and education leaders. The job-embedded and research-based program includes three institutes and five school site “learning walks” with a regional cohort to practice instructional leadership skills, focusing on increased knowledge and skills to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement.

The project is a collaborative effort between the Florida Department of Education, the University of Washington's Center for Educational Leadership and the Council for Educational Change. Educators were nominated by their district superintendents as leaders who could rise to the challenge.
