History of Florida’s Statewide Assessment Program
The State of Florida has, for some years, been committed to perfecting a workable system of accountability for the public schools. The Florida Statewide Assessment Program, begun in 1971, has been an important element in this accountability effort. The program was designed to assess students' academic strengths and weaknesses, particularly in the basic skills.
The history Web page includes a chronology and legal history of the statewide assessment program. While the information provided in the chronology and legal history is necessarily brief and does not detail all aspects of the history of the program, this information reflects a great effort to maintain a historical record of the statewide assessment program.
