Computer Science Standards and Instructional Support
Standards Overview
Florida’s state academic standards for computer science, effective July 2024, mark a significant update in the state’s approach to computer science education. These standards ensure K-12 students develop the essential skills needed for success in an increasingly digital world. They emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving and hands-on learning across all grade levels, from foundational skills in elementary school to advanced concepts in high school.
The updated standards focus on strands such as Computational Thinking and Reasoning, Communication and Collaboration, Personal Health and Safety, Computing Components, Programming and Software Engineering, Technological Impact, Emerging Technologies, Cybersecurity, and Digital Currencies and Financial Management. They aim to prepare students for future careers in technology and to engage as informed and responsible digital citizens.

Standards Progression
The K-12 Computer Science Standards and Benchmarks progression document highlights the vertical and horizontal alignment across grade levels, ensuring a cohesive and comprehensive learning experience for students. It illustrates how foundational skills in early grades build upon each other and progressively develop into more advanced concepts in later years. Additionally, the document shows how computer science content is interconnected across grade bands, ensuring that students gain a well-rounded understanding of the field while reinforcing core principles at every stage of their education.
